Turn old toys into eye-catching art

If you’ve got a box of broken or forgotten toys gathering dust, don’t throw them out just yet. With a bit of imagination, a dab of glue and a lick of paint, you can give them a second life as unique, quirky sculptures.

Gather your treasures

Start by sorting through any old toys that have seen better days - the ones missing wheels, arms or heads are perfect for this. Mix up different shapes and textures for interest: toy cars, dinosaurs, action figures, dolls, blocks, even puzzle pieces. Give everything a quick wash and dry so the glue and paint will stick properly.

Build your masterpiece

Arrange the toys until you like how they look - stacking, balancing and layering for depth. When you’re happy with the design, use strong craft glue or a glue gun to stick everything down. If you’re using a glue gun, work on a protected surface and take care with the hot nozzle.

Add some colour magic

Once it’s dry, it’s time for the fun part - painting. Spray paint gives a smooth, even finish, while acrylics let you add detail. You can go for one bold colour to make the shapes stand out or use a mix of bright hues for something playful and chaotic. Metallics like silver or gold can give your sculpture a cool, futuristic feel. Always paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask if you’re using spray paint.
