Diet
A balanced diet is important for hair and scalp health:
- Include protein; good sources include lean meat, poultry and fish, beans, and low-fat dairy products.
- Diets with inadequate protein can result in weak, brittle hair and hair loss.
- Zinc deficiency can cause hair to shed. Include nuts such as Brazil nuts, walnuts, pecans, cashews, and almonds into your diet.
- You should also eat lots of fruit, vegetables, leafy green salads and drink plenty of water.
Maintenance
- Don’t over wash – especially if your hair is coloured or has been chemically treated.
- Use lukewarm water. High temperatures strip essential oils, making your hair more prone to breakage.
- Try to avoid shampoos with harsh ingredients, such as ammonium lauryl sulphate or sodium lauryl sulphate. Remember, a higher cost doesn’t necessarily mean a higher quality product.
- Treat hair gently when it’s wet as it’s more susceptible to breaking. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle but don’t overdo it and never brush wet hair.
- When blow drying your hair, start with a low heat and gradually increase as needed.
- Allow your hair to air dry whenever possible.
- Don’t put pins or clips in the same place every time, to prevent hair breakage.
- Go easy on the ponytails. If your hair is pulled back every day, it’s going to cause strain and breakage.
- If you dye your hair, choose a shade that’s within three shades of your natural colour.
- Massage your scalp often to promote hair growth and increase blood circulation.
- Get your hair cut regularly to keep it healthy and get rid of split ends.
