Summer skin care

Long, bright days are lovely, but stronger UV levels can be tough on your skin if you don't give it a little extra care. A few simple habits can make a real difference.

Daily sun protection

High UV is a given in summer, and SunSmart recommends using sun protection whenever the UV Index reaches 3 or above. A broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 50+ sunscreen gives the strongest everyday defence against UVA and UVB rays. Apply it 20 minutes before heading outside, use it generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Lightweight long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat and close-fitting sunglasses also add reliable protection and help reduce your overall UV exposure throughout the day.

Hydration that keeps up with the heat

Summer weather can dry your skin out faster, especially if you’re spending time at the beach or in the pool. A gentle moisturiser can help to lock in hydration. If your skin feels tight by midday, a light top-up can help keep things balanced and comfortable.

Drinking water regularly supports your skin from the inside too. Keeping a bottle handy makes it easy to sip often, particularly on warm days or when you’re active.

Helping your skin recover

After a day outdoors, your skin may need a little extra care. A cool shower can feel soothing, and washing with a gentle cleanser helps remove sunscreen, sweat and salt without stripping moisture. If you’ve had more sun exposure than planned, an after-sun lotion or aloe-based product may feel calming.

Simple habits that go a long way

A few small steps make summer skin care much easier:
• Keep a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen near the door so you’re ready to go
• Choose shade whenever possible, especially around the middle of the day
• Reapply sunscreen even on cloudy days, as UV can still be high
• Use lip balm with SPF to protect delicate skin

Listening to your skin is always helpful. If a product stings, feels too harsh or leaves you irritated, swap it for something gentler. And if you notice changes such as new moles, spots that don’t heal or anything that looks unusual, check in with your GP or a dermatologist.

With the right mix of protection and simple daily care, your skin can stay healthy, comfortable and ready for everything summer brings.
