Sharpen scissors

Fold a piece of foil several times and snip through it with blunt scissors to give them a sharper edge.

Make painting less fiddly

Wrap foil around doorknobs, hinges and tap fittings before you paint. It hugs awkward shapes, takes seconds to apply, and comes straight off when you’re done.

Line the paint tray

Lay foil snugly into your roller tray before you start. When you finish, lift it out and bin it – no messy cleaning required.

Pause without drying out

Taking a short break mid-paint? Wrap brushes and rollers tightly in foil. It keeps them from drying out for a couple of hours so you can pick up where you left off.

Scrub pots and pans

Crumple foil into a firm ball and use it as a makeshift scourer for stuck-on food or grime. It’s great for barbecue plates and oven racks – just avoid non-stick surfaces.

Catch drips and wax

Slip a small square of foil under candles, glue guns or craft projects. It collects drips and peels away cleanly, saving tabletops and benchtops.

Keep birds off fruit trees

Hang strips of foil from branches or stakes around your fruit trees or veggie patch. The flash and movement help deter birds naturally.

Guard young seedlings

Wrap a loose collar of foil around the base of delicate seedlings. It keeps pests at bay while plants are getting established.

Cover craft surfaces

Foil makes an excellent disposable cover for messy projects like resin, dyeing or clay.

Shape a quick funnel

Need to pour beads, birdseed or screws into a small opening? Roll foil into a cone and trim the tip – a handy, disposable funnel in seconds.

Protect shelves and drawers

Line tool drawers or workshop shelves with foil for an easy-to-wipe surface that handles oil and dust.

Catch oven spills (the safe way)

Place a sheet of foil on the rack below your dish to catch drips (never on the oven floor or covering vents). It keeps things tidy without affecting airflow.

Protect floors during repairs

Lay a wide sheet of foil under messy jobs like fixing bikes, potting plants or cleaning sports gear.

Easy label removal

Before tackling sticky labels on jars, press foil over the area and warm it slightly with your hands. The gentle heat softens glue, so removers work faster.

Protect pie crust edges

Cover the edges of your pie with foil while baking so they don’t brown too quickly before the centre is ready.

Block pet access

Cats dislike the texture and sound of foil, so laying it on benchtops or furniture can help discourage climbing or scratching.

Protect soap when travelling

Wrap bars of soap in foil to keep them from going mushy or making a mess in your bag.

Make a seed starter tray

Shape foil into small cups or trays to start seeds before transplanting them into the garden.

Keep bananas fresh longer

Wrap the stems of bananas in foil – it slow s down the ripening process.

Recycling:

To make sure your aluminium foil gets recycled, collect all loose pieces and scrunch them into a ball that is at least the size of your fist – then put it into your yellow lid recycling bin.
