Handy tips for moving house

Moving house regularly ranks among life's most stressful experiences. Between organising paperwork, packing up years of belongings and trying to remember where you've put the kettle, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that a little planning can go a long way towards making moving day smoother.

Take photos of cables before unplugging electronics

Few things are more frustrating than staring at a bundle of cables and trying to remember where everything plugs in. Before disconnecting your TV, computer, gaming console or entertainment system, take a quick photo of the back of each device. When it's time to set everything up again, you'll have a handy reference right on your phone.

Clearly label every box

It might seem obvious, but detailed labelling of packing boxes can save hours of searching later. Instead of simply writing "Kitchen" or "Bedroom", include a brief list of what's inside, such as "Kitchen - mugs, coffee machine, tea towels". You'll thank yourself when you're trying to find something specific without opening every box in the house.

Label rooms in your new home

A simple sign on each door can make a huge difference, especially if friends, family members or professional movers are helping. Label each room and make sure the names match the labels on your boxes. This allows boxes to go straight to the correct room, reducing the amount of moving and sorting you'll need to do later.

Protect plates with paper plates

Packing dishes can be time-consuming, but there's an easy shortcut. Place a paper plate between each ceramic plate before stacking them in a box. This helps prevent scratches and provides a small amount of cushioning, saving both time and packing materials.

Remember to place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and avoid overloading them.

Keep important documents with you

Passports, birth certificates, insurance papers, moving contracts and other important documents should travel with you rather than in the moving truck. Keep them together in a clearly labelled folder or document wallet so they're easy to access when needed and less likely to be misplaced during the move.

Use towels and linens as packing materials

Before spending money on bubble wrap, look around your home. Tea towels, bath towels, blankets and even bedding can provide excellent protection for fragile items. Wrapping breakables in things you're already taking with you saves money, reduces waste and helps make the most of available packing space.

Keep screws and fittings together

Flat-pack furniture and bed frames often require partial disassembly before moving. As you remove screws, bolts and other fittings, place them in a labelled ziplock bag. Better still, tape the bag securely to the piece of furniture it belongs to. This simple step can save a lot of frustration when it's time to put everything back together.

Leave clothes on their hangers

Packing wardrobes doesn't need to take hours. Leave clothes on their hangers and group them together inside large bin liners. Tie the liners around the hanger hooks to keep clothes clean and protected during the move. Once you've arrived, you can transfer them straight into the new wardrobe with minimal effort.

Pack an overnight essentials bag

The last thing you'll want to do after a long day of moving is search through dozens of boxes looking for pyjamas or a toothbrush. Pack an overnight bag for each family member with clothes, toiletries, medications, chargers and any other essentials you'll need for the first night and morning in your new home.

Think of it as packing for a short holiday.

Declutter before you pack

Moving is the perfect opportunity to sort through your belongings and get rid of items you no longer use or need. Donate, sell or recycle anything that's just taking up space. The fewer items you move, the less you'll need to pack, transport and unpack, which can save both time and money.

Create a moving day checklist

With so many tasks to remember, a written checklist can be a lifesaver. Include everything from redirecting your mail and updating your address to taking final meter readings and returning spare keys. Crossing jobs off the list can also make the whole process feel more manageable.

Pack a box of immediate essentials

Choose one box that contains the items you'll want access to as soon as you arrive. This might include tea and coffee supplies, snacks, toilet paper, cleaning products, phone chargers, scissors and basic tools. Make sure it's clearly marked and loaded last so it's one of the first things unloaded.

Start packing early

One of the biggest causes of moving stress is leaving everything until the last minute. Begin by packing items you don't use every day, such as seasonal clothing, decorations and spare bedding. Packing a little bit each day feels much less overwhelming than trying to do everything in a weekend.

Take care of yourself

It's easy to get caught up in the logistics of moving, but don't forget to look after yourself. Stay hydrated, eat regular meals, take breaks when needed and ask for help if friends or family are available. Moving house is a big job, and you don't have to do it all alone.

A smoother move starts with good preparation

While moving house will probably never be completely stress-free, a bit of organisation and forward planning can make a world of difference. By packing smartly, labelling clearly and keeping essentials close at hand, you'll spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the excitement of settling into your new home.

Before you know it, the boxes will be unpacked, the kettle will be on, and your new house will start feeling like home.
