What is ridge capping and why is it so important?

Ridge capping may sound boring, but it’s an essential part of your tiled roof! Here’s why it’s important and what can go wrong.

What is ridge capping?

Ridge capping covers the points on your roof where two tiled roof surfaces meet. Without it, there would be a gap and water would pour into your house whenever it rains. This is why you should always make sure your ridge capping is in good condition.

Another element is the mortar that holds the ridge capping in place. If this is damaged, the result could be water damage to your ceilings and roof cavity and even the structure of your home

Why your ridge capping might need attention

  1. Your tiled roof is durable and long lasting – and it has to be! It withstands rain and storms in winter and the searing heat in summer. Over time, because of these extremes, the mortar holding your ridge capping in place can start to break down.
  2. Movement of the roof over time can cause the mortar to eventually crack. A major cause of this is the expansion and contraction of supporting timbers - again due to the weather.

The key to good roof maintenance is to keep an eye out for small problems and have them fixed long before the risk of ridge capping damage can happen.

Winter is on its way – make sure your tiled roof is ready

We may find ourselves living through unusual times, but this doesn’t mean that we can avoid a change in the weather!

Unfortunately, we often don’t realise that we have a roof leak until the water starts seeping through the ceiling. The best time to prepare for winter is before winter arrives, so now is a good time to have your tiled roof checked by a professional for any damage and have it repaired.

Common causes of roof leaks include:

  • Broken roof tiles
  • Loose roof tiles
  • Cracked or broken pointing & ridge capping

It’s business as usual for tiled roof repairs and restoration businesses, so give them a call for a pre-winter roof check and make sure your home is protected in winter.

Better roof, better value

A roof can account for up to 40% of the overall appearance of your home. If it is old and worn, your roof will make your home stand out for all the wrong reasons. A tiled roof restoration will instantly lift the look of your home, making it look fresh and new, improving its street appeal and its value.

If you have a tiled roof, a cost-effective roof restoration is a way to make it last longer and an a great opportunity to change its colour. There is a whole range of colour available, so you can create a more modern look for your home or retain a more traditional look.

Sun protection for your roof

Your roof gets more exposure to the harsh summer sun than any other part of your home. A full roof restoration is like a sunscreen for your roof, protecting it from damaging UV rays, which can break down the pointing mortar allowing it to crumble cause leaks. A roof restoration protects your roof and in turn, your home by preventing this from happening.

Fix leaks fast

If you discover a roof leak it's important to get it fixed as soon as possible. Roof leaks can rot the entire structure of your roof, including the roof insulation. In the worst-case scenario, the water damage could cause your internal ceilings to collapse.

Waterproof your roof

Never ignore a roof leak and don’t wait to get it fixed. Underestimating roof leaks can be costly and also dangerous. As the water trickles into your home it can touch wires in the ceiling and potentially start a fire. Signs of a leak include stains, mould or discolouration on your ceiling.

After years of protecting your home from rain, hail, storms and scorching temperatures, your tiled roof could be looking a bit the worse-for-wear and ruining the look of your home.
